The distinguished town clerk of Dunstable, Mr Charles Crichton Stuart Benning, in an unusual role...he was being "bumped" as a part of a ceremony to celebrate the extension of Dunstable's boundaries in 1907. Doing the bumping are Alderman Nash, Jack Dixon and "Bomber" Bowers, with Inspector Moses and Teddy Fange in close attendance.

The extra land incorporated into the borough included Upper Houghton, now part of High Street North. Mr Benning, the solicitor son of a former Mayor, also a solicitor, was town clerk for 32 years. The family law practice continues with the firm of
Knowles Benning in West Street.
